Framed coverlet fragment with figural birds woven by J. Hart. Dated 1834 with provenance. There are multiple notes attached to the back of this piece. The oldest note was attached to the remnant and reads:
"Be ye to others kind and true, as you'd have others be to you
and neither say or do the them
what e'er you would not take again
By J. Hart
Ohio 1834
...Piece woven into a coverlet at Aunt Paulina's house."
It's not often that I find a piece that has been so well preserved and documented! A very special and heartwarming gesture.
Coverlets woven by J. Hart can by found in the Art Institute of Chicago collection.
