Massive Industrial Engineering Table/Workbench c.1950s

Super-sized industrial engineering table out of the pattern shop of Buckeye Steel, Columbus Ohio. The pattern shop used large full-scale working drawings to build wooden moulds and patterns to cast locomotive parts. The employees of the pattern shop built this table, and located it in the engineering office to hold those giant drawings for reference. The lower cubbies house two hand-made yellow foot stools used to boost employees height to help read the drawings. The top can tilt slightly and has a metal and rope latching system to hold the top securely at an angle.

All joinery on the legs are mortised and screwed with multiple flathead screws for strength. The top surface (over 12 feet in length) is made of 1.75” thick planks that are glued up butcher-block style and then grooved on the backside to ensure the top stays as flat as possible in variable humidity. All the wood used is pattern grade material in multiple wood species.

Buckeye Steel was founded in 1888, then moved to the Parsons Avenue location in 1902. The pattern shop opened sometime thereafter. The table has signatures scribbled and carved on it from the 1950s, but I am not sure what year the table was constructed.

This is a fantastic vintage industrial table with loads of character and history that would be great in a commercial space, fabrication shop, retail, restaurant, office space, etc. It sits at least 16 people comfortably gathered around with stools.  

Condition notes: General wear consistent with age and use. Scrapes, dents, gouges in the wood. There are a series of pen marks on the top surface noting measurements. Can be seen in the pics. Detailed condition video available upon request.
